It’s funny that even though I have known about God as creator, I had not really registered in my finite mind that He made me. I am convinced if I had that revelation earlier in life, I would not have struggled with the identity that He uniquely chose for me; and for each one of us for that matter.
The late Dr. Myles Monroe said in one of his teachings, “If a purpose is not known, abuse is inevitable.” In other words, if one doesn’t realize they are created unique for a particular purpose, struggles ensue as one tries to fit in and find acceptance in the world system.
You see, words shape us. What we hear or lay our eyes on enters our soul and depending on the understanding we react accordingly.
I will never forget as I grew up in the precolonial time and went to a segregated school for my early education then independence came about. New opportunities opened up as I went to secondary school and was able to attend a previously European-only girl’s school.
It was a moment of joy and pride for both me and my parents; and for many too. With the open doors, came challenges that no one had prepared me for. My parents didn’t know this of course because they grew up in a generation where segregation was the norm. At that time, we had this ingrained tendency that black people were inferior to white and we were also in the minority where you’d find in a class of 25 to 30 pupils, there were only 5 black girls, which equates to 2%.
I still remember to this day the things that I tried to do to emulate the white girls so I could become like them. I noticed that they wiped their noses with white hankies, so next holiday I convinced my mother to buy me some. She didn’t know what was playing in my mind, which was that I liked that the white girls had narrow pointed noses and I didn’t like my well-groomed full nose.
So for the next 3 months, I diligently carried a white hanky and wiped my nose dozens of times with a convinced expectancy that at the end of the term, my nose would be narrow and pointed. To this day, I still wonder how my nose didn’t fall off from the onslaught of the abuse I self-inflicted in ignorance.
There were many incidences of such ignorant idiotic actions as I slowly but surely learned to appreciate and accept who God made me; I am more confident and love who I am today.
Years and years later, I learned from a total stranger why we have the shapes and sizes of the noses that we do.
I had gone to get new glasses when the lady attending to me struck up a conversation. It started with the kind of glasses we each liked to which she responded to liking the nose padded ones because they allow the glasses to sit better on her face. I immediately jumped in in agreement and added that I really don’t have too much choice because of my broad nose. I found out after years of wearing plastic frames that not only did they hurt my nose, but they left an indentation that looks horrible.
She then graciously explained why God made people in the hot regions of the earth with broader larger noses, and it was because of the heat! That having a narrow nose would not allow ease of breathing hot air. So since white people are in predominantly cold areas, their nose has to be narrow and small to allow small amounts of air at a time instead of breathing in copious amounts of cold air which would be very uncomfortable too. That’s when a light bulb went on in my mind and I thought, why didn’t I know that? Those many years ago? I would have spared my nose unnecessary abuse! LOL!
Then I was reading Psalm 139, one of my favorites. This time I decided to do a little digging so instead of the usual King James Version I went to the EASY Version. Two verses jumped at me and changed my perspective of God, giving me new insight into how God is more awesome than we have ever imagined. I will put them here so you can also see for yourself
Psalm 139:5 [KJV]
Thou hast beset me behind and before, and laid thine hand upon me.
I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvellous are thy works; and that my soul knoweth right well.
Psalm 139 [EASY Version]
You are all around me—in front of me and behind me.
I feel your hand on my shoulder.
I praise you because you made me in such a wonderful way.
I know how amazing that was!
Psalm 139 [TPT Version]
You’ve gone into my future to prepare the way,
and in kindness you follow behind me
to spare me from the harm of my past.
I thank you, God, for making me so mysteriously complex!
Everything you do is marvelously breathtaking.
The TPT version just opens another level of understanding of the magnitude of what God really does for us. For me, it’s a game-changer. I even coined a new praise line for this Almighty God.
Father, you truly are my Way Maker, My future Preparer. My Past Eraser. You are my Game Changer! All my bases are covered!

- There is no competition in my world because there is no copy of me; I am connected to my Maker. I am unique and successful, I draw from a living source within me that never runs dry. Age only accentuates my worth and helps me reinvent myself, the result is a new normal, not old age.
- Wherever I go, Your hand, God, guides me and Your strength empowers me to bring good cheer and success to others around me because Your presence is everywhere with me, bringing Light into the darkness. That Light is Jesus! Because of this, I am successful in all that I undertake and mistakes are opportunities to reinvent and climb higher.
- If all you can remember of me is the missed takes I have made along the way then please take a good look at who I am today. I retook the tests and learned from them. The tears have left sparkling diamonds in my eyes. I walk more gracefully, I smile more often, and if I could let you see my heart, I have learned to be content where I am while simultaneously still climbing the ladder, pressing on higher to that Ultimate higher ground. I am increasing in the knowledge of who God is; and that keeps me more and more balanced and at peace.
- Evolution did not bring me to life, but it is what I do every day! I evolve; Becoming better, steadier, richer, more honorable, stronger, and more glorious. Yes, I am not who I was yesterday, I am that I am like my Maker, there is no other one like me nor will there be any because God threw the mold away when He finished making me. This opens another channel to give back to God.
- I have a legacy of being imprinted in God’s mind and the desires that God has towards me are more than the grains of sand. God if I stray, I invite your searching gaze into my heart, examine me through and through, find out everything that may be hidden within me and lead me back to Your glorious everlasting path.
